This is a security system maintenance guide for home and business owners.
Weekly Perimeter Checks
Walk around your home or business each and every week to inspect all locks on doors and windows. Visually inspect each door and window frame to make sure there is no rotting or warping in the area. Check the sensors of each door and window while you are at it. These sensors typically need an occasional re-fastening. Adhesive should hold them in place for the long term, but they are known to loosen up over time. Wireless sensors will be battery-powered, so these batteries should be regularly tested, as well.
Test All Lighting
All exterior lighting should be checked at least once per month. Check the lights to ensure they all work properly and have functioning bulbs. Inclement weather can always cause disturbances to outdoor lighting, so you may need to readjust them for optimal performance.
Inspect Security Cameras
If cameras are included in your security package for either your home or business, try to examine them each day. Doing so frequently will help keep your property safe. Check all monitoring and recording devices to verify each camera is recording properly and producing clear visuals.
Test The Control Panel
The control panel is essentially the brain and heart of your security system. Every sensor signal will pass through the control panel. The panel will come with a test mode, which scans to make sure all components are functioning. It is never a bad idea to visually inspect the panel, as well, to make sure there are no signs of wear and tear or loose wiring.
Request Annual Security Inspections
Checking the security features yourself can certainly provide reassurance, but sometimes a professional inspection is necessary. Qualified technicians can ensure everything runs effectively and efficiently for years to come. Inspection will include a full check of all components, wiring, sensors and power supplies. Anything that is not working properly will be repaired or replaced. Inspectors can also update any software, if needed.
