Fingerprint Readers Cost
Mass production lately in biometric security has drastically cut the prices of most products. Biometric system’s price might depend on such factors as certifications, brand, type of sensor and waterproofing. The average cost of global mobile fingerprint sensor volumes dropped to $2 in 2020 from $5 in 2014.
These systems were used almost exclusively in high-security facilities or restricted areas, yet are commonly seen in commercial and residential properties these days. Whether it’s in a office, school, bank or server room, the use of fingerprint readers has exploded recently. Before purchasing a reader, though, consider the following factors: level of security needed, cost of the system and return on investment.
Types Of Fingerprint Readers
Below are the four most common types of fingerprint readers utilized today.
Capacitive Scanners
These scanners will use pixel array of capacitors rather than visible light to produce the fingerprint image. Capacitive scanners are quite difficult to forge because they cannot be confused with fingerprint images. Capacitive scanners are far more expensive than optical scanners.
- Average Cost Of Capicitive Scanners: $500-$1,900.

Optical Sensors
With a specialized digital camera setup, optical sensors capture fingerprint images with ease. Optical sensors are the most common type of fingerprint sensors used today. Additionally, they are quite affordable for commercial purposes. The sensors do pose some shortcomings, including issues with properly reading dirty fingers.
- Average Cost Of Optical Sensors: $500-$1,900.
*Price according to Algaelabsystems.
Thermal Line Sensors
Thermal line sensors have the ability to read fingerprint patterns by measuring temperature variation in fingertip valleys and ridges. These sensors require fingers to be moved over a linearly narrow array of sensors. The sensors are small and require finger movement to trigger recognition.
- Average Cost Of Thermal Line Sensors: $10-$200.
*Price according to Ashcroft.
Ultrasound/Ultrasonic Sensors
Ultrasound scanners will utilize high-frequency sound wave to read fingerprint patterns. Ultrasonic sound waves reflected from the fingertip surface are measured by the sensor, ultimately producing the pattern image. The dirtiness of the scanner does not impact the ability of these sensors to read patterns.
- Average Cost Of Ultrasonic Sensors: $50-$500.
*Price according to Apgsensors.
